As of January 2008, they also have never played in playoff game.
The team was originially called the Devil Rays and shortened to the "D-Rays" by their loyal fans. The Tampa Bay baseball organization officially changed their name on Novevember 8, 2007 to the Tampa Bay Rays. They also introduced new uniforms on the same day. In the original press release, principal owner Stuart Sternberg said "We are now the 'Rays' - a beacon that radiates throughout Tampa Bay and across the entire state of Florida. The new name reflects the Sunshine State's generous sunny weather and allows the team a broader fan base Statewide, not just in the Tampa/St. Pete area.
