Brad Penny is headed to Japan. The 33-year-old righty will join the Softbank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League, the team announced on its website Sunday. Penny, who pitched 12 seasons in the majors for six teams, indicated earlier in the week via Twitter he was headed for Japan.

The Softbank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League have signed former major league pitcher Brad Penny to a one-year contract. Softbank announced the signing of free agent Penny on its website Sunday The 33-year-old right-hander is expected to arrive in Japan on Wednesday. Financial terms of the deal were not released.

The Cardinals lost free-agent right-hander Edwin Jackson to the Washington Nationals. That they weren't able to sign Jackson was not unexpected but the move meant that the Cardinals will have an unprecedented five picks out of the first 58 in this year's June draft.

Jackson was worth a compensatory pick. The Cards will get two picks for first baseman Albert Pujols and another for right-handed reliever Octavio Dotel to go with their own choice.

Jackson had sought a multi-year contract but signed with Washington for one year and $10 million. The Cardinals had shown more recent interest when agent Scott Boras' tone changed more to a one-year deal than one of several years. But they weren't about to go to $10 million.

Adding more playoff teams to Major League Baseball's postseason simply makes mathematical sense. It may mean having an earlier start to the season in the spring, but expanding the playoffs to include more teams would make MLB more in line with other sports leagues.
