Padres Team Report (Yahoo! Sports) When the Padres first started talking about being a buyer as the trading deadline approached, the word was that they would seek an outfielder or another starting pitcher. Then second baseman David Eckstein went on the disabled list July 21 with his second right calf strain in a span of three weeks. Suddenly the Padres' trade focus switched to the infield. If Eckstein were going to be lost for an extended period of time, or if his injury were to occur again, the Padres were really weak in the infield. Struggling shortstop Everth Cabrera has again slipped under .200. And with Eckstein out, the backup infielder is right-handed pinch hitter Oscar Salazar. A club official said the Padres weren't going to win the National League West with Cabrera at shortstop.

Miguel Tejada is coming to San Diego, and his new teammates can't wait to get him in the lineup. The NL West-leading Padres obtained the 36-year-old Tejada and more than $1.15 million from the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, convinced that he can help them in the infield and at the plate. The Padres gave up Double-A right-hander Wynn Pelzer to get Tejada, who is expected to be in uniform on...

2 homers help Padres sweep Pirates, 6-3 (AP)

Two years after the Pirates won 67 games and the Padres won only 63, the opposite-coast franchises possess the National League's two lowest payrolls. Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Denorfia homered, Wade LeBlanc won for the first time in six weeks and first-place San Diego finished off its only series sweep in Pittsburgh since 1998, beating...

Sounds so easy and, often enough for the surprising San Diego Padres, it is exactly that. Get the lead early and then let the bullpen finish it late. Aaron Cunningham's triple started San Diego on a four-run second inning and the first-place Padres again took advantage of an early lead and their strong bullpen to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3 on Friday night.
