Athletics Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
Fri, 30 Jul 2010 02:30:52 PDT

Ben Sheets said Thursday that he's planning to have flexor tendon surgery "sooner than later" in order to have the option to return to baseball if he chooses, and also just so he can do everyday activity.

The 32-year-old right-hander acknowledged on a conference call, however, that he's toward the "back end" of his career. Sheets said rehab won't be the hard part, but he said he only would consider coming back if his right elbow feels much better than it did this season.

The A's have more injury issues to worry about than Sheets, whose season-ending elbow injury was announced Wednesday. On Thursday, two-time All-Star closer Andrew Bailey was examined by Rangers doctors.

Bailey hasn't pitched since July 20 because of back spasms, and it was thought he'd be back in...

Young, Teagarden's rare HR send Rangers by A's 7-4 (AP)
Thu, 29 Jul 2010 21:11:01 PDT
Even after a little juggling within the core of their lineup, the Texas Rangers were hardly surprised to see those guys string together hits and drive in runs. The surprises came from the rest of the lineup. David Murphy hit a 431-foot home run, Taylor Teagardan hit his first homer of the season and Mitch Moreland had two hits in his major league debut, helping the Rangers beat the Oakland...

A's Sheets to have surgery (AP)
Thu, 29 Jul 2010 18:48:27 PDT
Athletics right-hander Ben Sheets plans to have surgery soon on his troublesome throwing elbow, something he believes will increase the chance he could pitch again if he so decides. It won't be this season. He has a torn flexor tendon in the elbow that will be repaired in the operation. "It's a good idea to go ahead to give me more opportunities later on," Sheets said in a...

Wed, 28 Jul 2010 21:08:24 PDT
Trevor Cahill seems to save his best for the Texas Rangers. Cahill allowed two hits over eight innings, Kurt Suzuki homered and drove in two runs and the Oakland Athletics beat the Rangers 3-1 on Wednesday night. Cahill improved to 5-1 for his career against the Rangers, 2-0 with a 0.87 ERA in three starts at Rangers Ballpark, one of the toughest stadiums in the majors for pitchers.

Tue, 27 Jul 2010 21:19:25 PDT
Nelson Cruz made Cliff Lee feel better about a no-decision. Cruz's two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th lifted Texas to a 3-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday night after Lee struck out a career-high 13 and scattered five hits in a nine-inning effort that failed to produce his 100th career win.

Major League Baseball is asking San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed to hold off on putting a measure on the ballot for an Oakland Athletics ballpark. Reed said he spoke with MLB President Bob DuPuy on Tuesday about the proposed measure. Last week, the mayor said he would ask the City Council to approve a ballot measure even though MLB has yet to decide whether the team can move.

Braden earns first win since perfect game May 9 (AP)
Sun, 25 Jul 2010 17:33:33 PDT
Dallas Braden glanced into the stands as he walked off the mound and made eye contact with his grandmother. Peggy Lindsey gave him a look that told the pitcher he was on track for a long-awaited victory -- but don't count it yet. Braden won for the first time in 10 starts since his perfect game May 9, ending a five-game losing streak as the Oakland Athletics beat the Chicago White Sox 6-4 on...

Cust hits 2 homers in A's win (AP)
Sat, 24 Jul 2010 17:36:18 PDT
Jack Cust's patience and penchant for power kept him from making a single out. The Athletics enjoyed every moment of it as he hit two home runs and walked three times to help Oakland beat the Chicago White Sox 10-2 Saturday. "Any time you're not heading straight back to the dugout you have to feel good," Cust said.

Buehrle, Quentin lead White Sox past A's (AP)
Fri, 23 Jul 2010 23:30:36 PDT
Mark Buehrle was so locked in he didn't even notice the malfunctioning stadium radar gun clock one of his first-inning pitches at 800 mph. Chicago's ace left-hander only seemed that dominant. Buehrle pitched a four-hitter on the one-year anniversary of his perfect game and the White Sox beat the Oakland Athletics 5-1 on Friday night.

Kouzmanoff's two-out RBI single capped a wild 10th inning and the Oakland Athletics rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 5-4 on Tuesday night. The 10th inning featured a slick double play by Oakland, three Boston pitchers in the bottom half and a...

Braden is looking for his first win since throwing a perfect game against Tampa Bay on May 9.

Matsuzaka leads Red Sox past Athletics 2-1 (AP)
Mon, 19 Jul 2010 22:51:27 PDT
After watching Daisuke Matsuzaka struggle so much in the first inning this season, Boston manager Terry Francona was quite pleased with how his starter looked right from the start against Oakland. Matsuzaka pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning and Adrian Beltre homered to help the Red Sox snap the Athletics five-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory Monday night.

Rosales leads A's roll to 9-6 win over Royals (AP)
Sun, 18 Jul 2010 15:33:29 PDT
The Oakland Athletics are tied for last in the American League in home runs, so it figures that they don't rely often on the long ball to win games. They did on Sunday. Adam Rosales, Kevin Kouzmanoff and Jack Cust each went deep, and Vin Mazzaro pitched into the eighth inning to help the A's beat the Kansas City Royals 9-6 and finish a three-game sweep.
