The New York Yankees are one of the founding charter member teams of the American League. Originally, they were known as the Baltimore Orioles, being based in Baltimore. In 1903 they relocated to New York City and became known as the New York Highlanders for the next 10 years. In 1913 they offically adopted the Yankees name.
The New York Yankees have won a total of 26 World Series titles and 39 American League Penants. They are in the Eastern Division of the American League. Most famous baseball players have been on the New York Yankees roster at one time or another. The team, as well as the team owner, are legendary.The New York Yankees have one of the highest player payroll's in the entire baseball league.
