Mets Team Report (Yahoo! Sports) Jerry Manuel walked out quickly to the mound, the Mets manager signaling to the bullpen long before he ever made it out to greet R.A. Dickey. It was probably the best idea, since the last time Manuel had come to the mound to get Dickey, it turned into a prolonged debate as Dickey tried to argue with Manuel and even the umpires to stay on the mound and keep pitching. This time, though, Manuel stepped out and the exchange was much more amicable. "It was definitely a more pleasant conversation," Dickey said. "I wanted to finish the game. I thanked him for giving me the chance." On Sunday, it was the sixth inning when Manuel came out and took the ball with Dickey nursing a slight muscle strain in his hip area.

R.A. Dickey has been up and down from the minors, bouncing from one city to another while pitching for four big league teams over the past five years. Wed, 28 Jul 2010 21:47:39 PDT
Albert Pujols had the 20-inning marathon that the St. Louis Cardinals played against the Mets earlier this year in the back of his mind when he stepped to the plate in a tie game Wednesday night. It was already the 13th inning, and with a day game on the horizon, the big slugger wanted nothing more than to drive in a run and head for bed.

Beltran wrecks Wainwright, Mets beat Cardinals 8-2 (AP)
Tue, 27 Jul 2010 20:23:35 PDT
Rather than rehash the curveball that froze him so long ago, Carlos Beltran focused on the current task -- getting hits off Adam Wainwright, and getting the New York Mets back into the race. Beltran gained a small measure of revenge against Wainwright and the Mets suddenly broke loose Tuesday night, roughing up the St.

Joe Torre was the first and last major league manager to be ejected by umpire Doug Harvey. "I didn't know I was his first one until he told me about a month before," Torre recalled Sunday before his Los Angeles Dodgers beat the New York Mets.
Kershaw, Dodgers stifle punchless Mets 1-0 (AP)

The added incentive behind Clayton Kershaw's stellar performance had more to do with a tired bullpen than the fact that it was his first start since appealing a five-game suspension. Kershaw scattered seven hits over eight innings and Russell Martin hit an eighth-inning RBI double in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 1-0 victory over the punchless New York Mets on Sunday.

Loney homered in the 13th inning, giving the Dodgers a 3-2 victory on Saturday. The easygoing first baseman's seventh homer of the season was even more timely because manager Joe Torre had no true relievers left in his...
