Veteran reliever Trevor Hoffman had a cortisone injection in his elbow during the All-Star break that he said made a difference of "night and day" in how he has felt throwing the ball since.

Prior to the break, Hoffman allowed six hits and three runs in three innings over three appearances. Since getting the injection, he has pitched six scoreless innings with three hits, no walks and seven strikeouts.

Over that span, the former closer has thrown 53 of 69 pitches for strikes.

"I had elbow tendinitis that I never felt when I was out there," said Hoffman. "It helped to get a cortisone shot at the break in my elbow.

"When I first came back (after the break) and went to Atlanta and played catch, I went back to throw and felt something was missing.
