The Detroit Tigers are a professional baseball team based out of Detroit, Michigan. They have been in the Central Division (starting in 1998) of the American League. The team was founded in 1894 as the Detroit Wolverines and was in the Western League, a predecesor of the American League. In 1901 the team became one of the original eight Amercan League founding teams. Their name comes from a Detroit based military unit and the are known by several nicknames, including "the Tigs", "the Motor City Kitties", and "the Bless You Boys".

The Detroit Tigers played in historic Tiger Stadium from 1912 until 2000. Since then, the Detroit Tigers have called Comerica Park their home field stadium. The Detroit Tigers have had great players on thier roster in the past including Ty Cobb (1905 - 1926), Denny McLain, Billy Martin, and Vida Blue. The famous Sparky Anderson, one of the "winningest managers" of all time, managed the team from 1979 to 1995
