The Softbank Hawks of Japan's Pacific League have signed former major league pitcher Brad Penny to a one-year contract. The Boston Red Sox have hired Gary Hughes, a longtime scout who tried to sign New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady out of high school to play baseball. Hughes, 70, will work with the team as a professional scouting consultant. He spent the last nine seasons with the Chicago Cubs.
