Red Sox Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

A year ago, it was the most difficult week of Victor Martinez's career.

Martinez knew the Indians were going to trade him. On July 29, they sent ace pitcher Cliff Lee to the Phillies for four prospects, so as the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline neared, it made little sense for them to cling to Martinez, a switch-hitting slugger who would be a welcome fit in the middle of any contender's lineup.

Every day, he got phone calls and text messages from family and friends who wanted to pass along a new rumor or ask if he'd heard anything definitive.

"It's not fun," Martinez told the Boston Herald. "I mean, especially when it's your first organization and you have everything there.

The U.S. is fighting two wars, and millions are looking for work. So what is making politicians thump their lecterns in two of New England's hottest political races this summer? Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling. The ballplayer-turned-businessman is back in his favorite spot -- the center of attention -- after his startup video game company was offered a sweetheart deal to leave Massachusetts...

Wed, 28 Jul 2010 18:17:30 PDT
When Marco Scutaro saw a changeup coming from one of the hardest-throwing relievers in baseball, Boston's scrappy shortstop knew exactly what to do with that stroke of good luck. His grand slam sent the Red Sox home from the West Coast with ample reason to believe they're still in the postseason chase.

Lackey disappointed by boos, leads Sox past Angels (AP)
Tue, 27 Jul 2010 23:21:26 PDT
John Lackey expected a little appreciation of his eight years with the Los Angeles Angels. He got mostly boos in his return to Orange County, perplexing the Angels' former ace. Lackey still left his old mound with another win when the Red Sox backed him with another late-inning rally. Lackey gave up seven hits while pitching into the eighth inning, and Jed Lowrie's two-run double in the...

Five no-hitters -- two of them perfect games -- and another gem that was spoiled by an umpire. I can't explain it," said Krukow, who pitched in the majors from 1976-89.

When the line drive hit Dan Haren's right forearm with a sickening smack, a collective shudder pulsed through Angel Stadium. Not even the Boston Red Sox wanted Haren's debut with the Los Angeles Angels to end with an ugly injury. A few hours later, Haren grimaced gratefully when he rubbed the bandage on his bruised arm.

Saunders comes through again as M's top Red Sox (AP)
Sun, 25 Jul 2010 17:39:26 PDT
In the continuing challenge to develop young talent, the thought of pinch-hitting for Michael Saunders never crossed the mind of Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu even with Boston lefty Hideki Okajima on the mound and a trio of right-handed bats on the bench. The Red Sox may be cursing Saunders for some time to come.

Josh Beckett thought he was initially "methodical" in his return from two months on the disabled list. These days, methodical is plenty good enough to beat the bickering Mariners. They are beating on each other inside their own dugout. Beckett was in command in his 5 2-3-inning return from a low back strain, and Bill Hall homered in the seventh inning to lift the Boston Red Sox to a 2-1...
