Buck Showalter was hired to manage the club, receiving a contract that will run through the 2013 season. Hours after that news broke, the team traded one of its core players. Third baseman Miguel Tejada was dealt to the Padres in exchange for minor league right-hander Wynn Pelzer. Baltimore also sent San Diego around $1.15 million, more than half of the amount Tejada is owed for the remainder of his one-year contract. Showalter, 54, most recently served as an analyst for ESPN after being fired by Texas in 2006. He is 882-833 in stints with the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Rangers, twice winning Manager of the Year.
